In reply to youssoufsawadogo’s post on August 9, Hey Youssouf, Would please be kind enough to write down in detail how you made the changes in the registery as Microsoft refuses to respond to the request. I’m facing the same issue. In reply to HashimMalik’s post on August 10, Excuse me for the delay. Hope it helps. In reply to youssoufsawadogo’s post on August 10, Bro sorry to say that it doesn’t work for me , I followed the exact steps you mentioned but bad luck. In reply to Noor ul Hadi’s post on August 13, Can you tell what happened after you did it?

In reply to youssoufsawadogo’s post on August 13, I followed the same steps, step by step. If you still want to change i will change mine now and send you real-time screenshots for you!! The method above was the right but wasn’t finished!!

Restart you computer 6. Switch back to a your Microsoft account. Click on it and then click the End Process button. I would start with the original instructions. Now I am clear on your instructions and advice. Very good. I appreciate your articles and I respect your wisdom.

Am I correct Martin that this is virtually your solution posted 7 months earlier, or is their a distinction between the two? And if there is a distinction, do you have any comment on any difference between the two? System Restore is not working as well? This article was written for Windows 7. Can you help me please?? Solution found… netplwiz! After following the instructions above I was able to change the folder name. However when I was getting about 10 or so errors when trying to create a backup with backup and restore.

It was trying to look for the old user name:. There were A LOT of references, way more than just the backup and restore errors.

Martin — Thank you. Got rid of the old user name. I have not tried it on Windows 10 but see no reason why it should not work. Make sure you make a backup before you try it though. However, I have closed all the files and folders in the account before logging off from that. Could you please help me in getting the issue resolved.

A few methods were mentioned in the previous comments on how to accomplish this task. I too was having the same problem you are. Simply reboot into Safe Mode and you should be able to rename the folder. It worked for me. As long as you are running an Antivirus Suite it will probably block any attempt to rename the profile folder. Get the recent offline installer package of your Antivirus software and, if supported, save your settings. Reboot in save mode and log in to the alternative user account.

Start an explorer window or other file manager of your choice with administrative rights and you should be able to rename the user accont folder. Registry editing should be done also in safe mode. If you are using a third party tool like Registry Toolkit — start it with administrative rights.

Some settings may still refuse to make changes — then you have to gain ownership, permit yourself full acces, make the changes and finally re-assign ownership to SYSTEM. Yeah I did this and it basically moved all my desktop folders somewhere. Changed the desktop theme too and the original users name is still there and now there is a public folder. This old article addresses an issue I ran into on Win X v Activate the Administrator account. You can activate the administrator account inside the Administrator Command Prompt.

Use the following steps to sign out of your user account: Click the Windows Start icon. Log in to the Administrative account. The Administrator account doesn’t require a password to sign into it by default. Use the following steps to log in to the Administrative account: Click and drag up on the sign-in screen.

Click Administrator in the lower-left corner. Click Sign In. Navigate to the user folder. Replace “[old folder name]” with the name of the folder you want to change. This command changes the name of the user folder.

If either the older or new folder name has a space in it, you will need to put the folder name in quotation marks ” “. Open the Registry Editor as an Administrator. To do so, click the Windows Start icon and type regedit. Then right-click the Registry Editor icon and click Run as Administrator.

Navigate to the ProfileList in Registry Editor. Use the panel to the left to navigate to ProfileList folder. Expand Microsoft. Expand WindowsNT. Expand Currentversion. Expand ProfileList.

Click the folder with the correct user SID. Match the folder name with the user SID you wrote down in a previous step. Click that folder to open it. Double-click ProfileImagePath. This opens the ProfileImagePath key. Change the value data to match the new folder name and click Ok.

The space below “Value data” displays the path of the user folder. Replace the old folder name at the end of the path with the new folder name and click Ok. Make sure the spelling and capitalization match the new folder name exactly. Restart your computer. Click the Windows Start icon and then click the power icon. You will still need to install your applications on the new account, but your user folder name will be the same as the original local account.

The more advanced method for changing your user folder name is to do so in the registry. This method won’t force you to make a new account, but any mistakes can make your user profile invalid, and even when it works, some software may not function properly due to file path conflicts. Proceed with caution and only if you’re happy to create a system restore point before starting in the event something goes wrong. Open the Command Prompt in administrator mode.

Type wmic useraccount list full and press enter. In the resulting list, search for your existing account name. Take note of the SID number for your existing account name. Rename JonM Jon Martindale , for example. Be sure to set your new account name to what you want the user folder to be. And finally now your steps have helped me fixing my very problem.. Joy August 27, pm. I followed your instructions, and it worked in changing the profile name.

It also created a new profile folder with the new profile name. I right click the TEMP folder to delete it, but is it says, “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

Lakonst January 24, am. Florent March 3, pm. It went almost perfect. I can’t make the 5th step because I don’t have the admin rights… I don’t understand how but I probably made something wrong because my account with the new name is a guest account….

Before starting the procedure, my account was the administrator one. I tried to log to the admin account but my classical password is not working and I have no idea what it could be. Lakonst March 4, pm. Adam March 14, pm. It mostly worked, but it complete killed my Start menu; clicking on it does nothing. Also, OneDrive is still trying to use the old folder name.
